Organic Building
by Markus 'giles' Koehorst on Feb.27, 2012, under Building a house in Spain, musings
As much as I want to build the house quickly, I am constantly reminded that I need to be patient. There are a number of factors holding me back as it were and I am starting to appreciate most of those as beneficial.
“Patience is a Virgin!”
This alternative to ‘Patience is a Virtue’ always makes me chuckle, and in most cases .... continue reading 'Organic Building'
Grand Designs?
by Markus 'giles' Koehorst on Feb.25, 2012, under Building a house in Spain, Spain
I have just sent the following application to Grand Designs (a British programme about people building their dream home):
What do you think? Will they bite?
The First Step

“You shall live in
a caravan”
“No! Not forever!
Just for a little bit, while you build your dream home!”
Phew, that’s a relief. Living in a caravan long term is not my idea of comfort. They are small and… plastic.
But you have to admit that they have everything you need, even if you live off grid, like we shall be doing.
So, we bought a cheap one, as a first step, yesterday. We are picking it up tomorrow, to install on our plot straight away. It means we will have a toilet, a shower and a kitchen from day one!
It also means that we can give in our notice for the apartment, and use that monthly outgoing for the house.
Then later on, when our house is finished, we will have extra space for visitors.
So come and visit us!
Building a house in Spain
by Markus 'giles' Koehorst on Feb.21, 2012, under Building a house in Spain
A couple of weeks ago, the most amazing thing happened. Greys and I bought a little piece of land in Spain, straight out of my dreams.
A little bit up in the mountains, on a river, just outside a sleepy little village, it even has an orange grove on it!
Absolutely gorgeous
The only snag? You can’t build there
….not ‘officially’ anyway, which is why it was cheap.
However, in practice, it seems we might get away with a ‘temporary structure’.
So…. what to do? Here’s the plan…
I shall build a home that is:
- facing East
- off grid (sort of a necessity since there is no gas nor electricity)
- eco-friendly
- made from recycled materials as much as is practical (cheaper too!)
- beautiful
- warm in winter and cool in summer
- set in a forest garden that will feed us
and finally, but most importantly
- easy to assemble and disassemble in one day
Impossible? Well….
I have some ideas
so stay tuned!
