The Sugar Mango

Simply delicious, and, as the name would imply, very sweet.

the bite-size sugar mango

I discovered this phenomenon today at the market in Villa de Leyva. The intoxicating smell of sweet and very ripe fruit attracted me from accross the street.

The ‘mango de azucar’ is about the size of a free range egg, which makes it much more practical than your standard mango. I absolutely love the taste of mangoes, but rarely buy them because they are so messy!

The sugar mango on the other hand, is very easy to eat. You slice it round the middle and you take one end off, to be grazed straight out of the skin. The other side will still have the pip in it, but no worries. I found it best to just stuff the whole thing in my mouth, separating the skin with my teeth, in one delicious stuffing movement.  Once you are finished delighting in the nectar sweet taste, you just spit the pip out. Done, and ready for the next one.

“It comes in pints?!” said Pippin (Lord of the Rings).

My sugar mango comes in bite-sizes.
